Company spotlight & giveaway: Dogwood Black

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

If you're a fan of traditional southern style filled with button-up shirts, bow ties, and neck ties than you'll love what the owners of Dogwood Black come up with. Their newest creation, Dogwood Black, is a company that's all about American-made products and embody iconic preppy style. My favorite feature on Dogwood Black's website is their custom 3D apparel designer, where you can design the perfect button-up shirt, bow tie, and neck tie for any occasion.

To learn more about this up-in-coming company, read through my interview with owner Michael Wood. As an added bonus, Michael is giving one Chicago Prepster reader a red and green tartan bow tie! Details at the bottom of the post.

1. Why did you start Dogwood Black?
There is such a long answer for this question that in its simplest form; We wanted American manufacturing. We wanted to use exceptional materials. We wanted something that we could wear everyday and be proud of.

2. What would you say is Dogwood Black's defined style? What makes the style different from other brands?
Our goal with the style was to keep everything "clean","simple" and "classic". The style itself isn't all that different from other companies. A lot of what we're doing is really only done in the highest tiers of mens apparel. For example, you could probably find another shirt that looks like ours. But I guarantee you, you won't find the same quality for less than $200.

3. What is the inspiration behind the brand?
As any 6'4" person knows (or any unusual body sizes), getting off the shelf clothing that fits is impossible. A large shirt fits my torso but the sleeves are 3" to short. Or, you can get an XL and the sleeves are closer to where they should be but now your torso is floating in an Olympic sized swimming pool. But more than just sleeve length and collar type.. I always found shirts that I really loved but I wanted to tweak just a few things. Maybe I wanted a french cuff instead of barrel , or maybe I wanted a button down collar instead of a cutaway. The premise of the custom shirts in 3D was so that you could get it how you want it, and see how it will look with extreme accuracy.

4. Where do you hope to see the company in the next few years?
Right now all of our manufacturing is spread up and down the East Coast. We're extremely happy with the quality level that we've achieved but we'd really like to bring all the manufacturing in house here in Virginia. Our bow ties are currently made in house and it just brings me a great deal of pride when I get to tell people we make them all right here in Fredericksburg, Va.

5. What makes your company unique?
We have 3 things that really set us apart. One, everything is made in America. No exceptions. Two, we use the absolute finest materials money can buy. Three, we're the very first company in the world that can deliver a custom shirt in a week. The next best competitions requires nearly 4-5 weeks on average.

6. Why should people buy their clothing from Dogwood Black?
For every shirt you buy, you employ an American for nearly 3 hours. We spend on average $63 dollar per shirt. We might be the first company to ever publicly disclose what we pay per shirt. The reason why, Brooks Brothers and Polo don't want you to know that the $80 shirt of theirs you're wearing only cost them $9-10 to make. If we were to mark up our shirts according to traditional retail margins. Our wholesale cost would be $126 (which is more than what we retail for) and our retail would be $252. You're essentially getting a $250 shirt for $110 or $135 if you get a custom one.

7. What would you say is your company's motto or slogan?
We're the very first company that puts the country of origin label on the outside of the shirt and as we like to say. "The only company proud enough to put the label on the outside". We proudly display the American flag on the outside of our shirts. It would be comical to watch our competitors put their manufacturers flag on the outside.
